Fever Dream of Napoleon
Last night I had a fever and it was like being possessed[^possessed]
Maybe because I was reading Les Misérables before bed, and then I dreamed about the French Revolution (but Les Misérables isn’t about the French Revolution
Because we couldn’t stand the heavy taxes, we all chopped off Louis together
Then followed Napoleon from Toulon, the Alps, Egypt all the way to the Brumaire
I had barely reached the Arc de Triomphe when I woke up, and then in a very muddled state I was in bed trying desperately to cheer for Napoleon’s coronation, tried for over ten minutes, got a bit thirsty and wanted to drink water, and while sitting in the chair drinking water I started thinking about what on earth I was just doing
Went back to bed but couldn’t sleep either, kept thinking about the anti-French alliances, my own thoughts were almost drowned out, nothing but moving artillery and cavalry flanks, until I finally realized I could still speak, could act on my own thoughts, I was still myself —only then could I fall asleep in peace

[^possessed]: “Possessed” (夺舍) —literally “seized and replaced” —is a Chinese internet slang term borrowed from Taoist mythology, meaning your body has been taken over by another entity. In casual use, it describes feeling like you’re acting completely out of character, as if someone else is piloting your body.
